Since we last wrote about the organic, hydroponic farm Archis Acres in Escondido a lot has happened. Last May they had a fundraiser to enable them to serve more vets with PTSD who have had a tough time readjusting to life back in the States.

Vets can get away from the very different types of pressures they experience in daily life when they return from combat. Farming enables them to ease back in and learn a practical skill at the same time.

While the desires for expansion by veteran Colin Archipley and his wife Karen were not immediately realized, they are now building a new green house that is 36 feet by 120 feet and twice the size of their existing green house. They currently sell organic basil in local markets and many farmers markets in the San Diego area.

This expansion will enable them to serve even more vets. Talking with them for even a short time it is clear that is their focus, helping vets adjust to the stresses of normal life.

They also have recently expanded to an adjacent farm owned by neighbors who are not actively working their land. They can use that additional 2.5 acres, but right now it is a mess. On January 10 they will be having a cleanup potluck from 10am-3pm and invite anyone who is willing to bring their jeans, hedge clippers and dish to share, to help. They are not generally open to the public so it is also a great opportunity to see what they are doing. R-Awesome Happening and the Progressive Democrats of America are supporting the cleanup. Their goal and biggest need for the coming year is to gain the funds and sponsorship to gain accreditation from Mira Coast College. It costs $30,000 to be accredited. Once they are, Veterans can learn at Archis Acres and work towards earning a horticultural certificate through Mira Costa, who has one of the best horticultural programs on the West Coast. A program has been put together for Archis Acres, but funds are needed to make it a reality.

The Dolphin-Story of a Dreamer Film Released

The book The Dolphin-Story of a Dreamer by Sergio Bambaren has been made into an animated film. It is one of the 20 animated films submitted that will compete for 5 nominations for the Oscars best Animated Movie. Twentieth Century Fox has picked up the North American rights to Peruvian computer-animated picture The Dolphin, Story of a Dreamer. Fox released the toon in October across Latin America and Brazil. It scored the biggest opening weekend for a local film in Peru. Produced by Dolphin Films with Italys Password and Germanys DDG, Eduardo Schuldt directed the picture and Sergio is one of the producers.

The book and the film tell the story of Daniel Dolphin who abandons the safety of his pod to explore the ocean and discover the purpose of his life.

Sergio Bambaren is an Australian citizen who was born in Lima Peru. After graduating from college he took a job in Sydney and became General manager of a UK based company at the young age of 34. Ultimately he gave that up to pursue his dreams and find the true purpose of his life. The Dolphin is based on his personal encounter with a lonely dolphin while surfing in Portugal. It is a story of courage and struggle against our own fears and limits.

The book has been translated into more than 40 languages and has sold more than 15 million copies worldwide. The film is now being scheduled for a Feb 2010 release in the USA. See www.thedolphin-movie.com for updates.

Shakespeare Unscripted Opens Jan. 10

Impro Theatre and Combined Artform open Shakespeare Unscripted Jan. 10. Performances are at Theatre Asylum at 6320 Santa Monica Blvd. in Hollywood, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 7 pm.

Impro Theatre presents all-new, improvised plays in the spirit of the Bard. Using only their guts, wits and a few suggestions from the audience to kick off the show, Impro Theatre attempts to ascend the brightest heaven of invention and create a completely original and entertaining story for each performance.

Shakespeare Unscripted features Tracy Burns, Brian Jones, Stephen Kearin, Brian Lohmann, Nick Massouh, Jo McGinley, Dan OConnor, Paul Rogan, Michele Spears and Floyd Van Buskirk.

Impro Theatre is an unscripted repertory theater company. Since 1988, the company (formerly LA Theatresports) has brought unscripted theatre based on great literature to Los Angeles and the world. Women by Women Art Exhibit Jan. 16Feb 14

The San Diego Art Department (SDAD) is hosting an exhibit titled, Women by Women; Figurative and Conceptual Images of Women Featuring artwork by The San Diego Womens Figurative Group.

The exhibition opens on Sat, Jan. 16 from 69 pm and runs through Feb 14. The exhibit will be held at The San Diego Art Department (SDAD) located on Ray Street in North Park one block east of 30th, just south of University.

Naomi Judd at Scripps Jan. 22

Yoga USA Day Celebration Jan. 23

Sat, Jan. 23 is Yoga USA day, which is celebrated all throughout our country. Yoga Day USA was created by Yoga Alliance, the national education and support organization for yoga in the United States. In San Diego, Silver Age Yoga Community Outreach (SAYCO) will open all their classes to the general public throughout the week of Jan. 18-23. The purpose is to raise awareness for the non-profit, which has provided over 7000 free yoga classes to underserved seniors in our county since 2004. Donations will be gratefully accepted at each class during this week. Every dollar raised will go to Silver Age Yoga Community Outreach to grow this health enhancing program and keep the classes free for the seniors. www.silverageyoga.org
